Friendship Through Football: Igbo Union Stoke-on-Trent vs Igbo Union Wolverhampton
On Saturday, 19th July 2025, the Igbo Union Stoke-on-Trent made history by hosting the Igbo Union Wolverhampton in our first-ever friendly football match. The event took place at Roe Lane Playing Fields, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire (ST5 3PH), and it was more than just a game — it was a celebration of friendship, unity, and our shared cultural identity as Umu Igbo in the diaspora.
The day began with great anticipation as both teams gathered, full of energy and laughter. Our President, Anthony-Claret Onwutalobi, warmly welcomed our brothers from Wolverhampton, reminding everyone that this hand of friendship was the true purpose of the event. He emphasized that while football is enjoyable and competitive, the real victory is in building connections, strengthening unity, and fostering collaboration among Igbo communities in the United Kingdom.
The match kicked off under bright skies and the cheers of supporters. The Stoke-on-Trent team displayed an outstanding performance, winning the game with an emphatic 8–0 victory. But beyond the scoreline, what stood out most was the camaraderie, the sportsmanship, and the joy shared on and off the field.

After the game, both teams came together for a feast filled with delicious food, drinks, and music. Laughter filled the air as members from both Unions networked, bonded, and shared their vision for future collaborations. It was a perfect atmosphere of unity — proving that when Umu Igbo gather, there is always room for love, joy, and celebration.
The President of Igbo Union Wolverhampton, Mr. Ike, expressed his deep appreciation for the hospitality shown by Igbo Union Stoke-on-Trent. Despite the loss on the field, he highlighted that the true success of the day was the friendship that was strengthened between both groups. He joyfully extended an invitation to us for their upcoming Iri Ji Festival on the 7th of September 2025, while we also reminded them that our own Iri Ji Festival will take place on the 6th of September 2025 at Northwood Stadium.
This friendly match was not just about football; it was about unity, cultural pride, and building bridges across communities. It set the tone for future collaborations between our two Unions, as we continue to showcase the strength of Ndi Igbo abroad.
Special appreciation goes to our donors, players, organizers, executives, and our amazing women who stood firmly behind the event. Your team spirit, generosity, and dedication made the day an unforgettable success.
As one family in unity, we say: Dalụnu! May God bless us all and keep us united in love, strength, and culture.
