Igbo Union, Stoke-on-Trent’s Inaugural New Yam Festival Celebration

In a vibrant display of culture and unity, the Igbo Union in Stoke-on-Trent celebrated its first-ever New Yam Festival on September 16, 2023. The event was a resounding success, drawing attendees from diverse backgrounds and prestigious guests, making it a memorable day for all.

The festivities commenced with a lively dance entry by the Igbo Union members, setting the stage for an enchanting evening. Chief Hon. Anthony-Claret Onwutalobi, the Chairman of the Igbo Union, extended a warm welcome to the attendees and introduced the members.

Dignitaries were then gracefully ushered to the high tables, with Chief Anthony-Claret leading the way, accompanied by enthusiastic dance performances. Among the honoured guests were Chief Kingsley Abisi, President of the Anambra State Association Finland, Chief Superintendent Elliott Sharrard-Williams, Staffordshire Commander of the County Local Policing Command, Superintendent Mark Ward, Superintendent of Staffordshire County Local Policing Command, and Chief Inspector Donna Harvey, Head of Information Governance Op Hampshire, UOF & PIM Strategic Lead, among many other VIPs.

The event began on a patriotic note as attendees unitedly sang the national anthems of both Nigeria and the United Kingdom. President Chief Anthony-Claret delivered the opening speech, expressing his gratitude to all attendees, especially the members who contributed to the success of the day. He also extended heartfelt thanks to Chief Superintendent Elliott Sharrard-Williams and Chief Inspector Donna Harvey of Staffordshire Police for their invaluable contributions to discussions concerning police powers, use of force, and their impact on the black community. These discussions have paved the way for improved police-community relations and training.

Acknowledging the esteemed special guests, including Parliamentary candidate Adam Jogee and other politicians and councillors from the Labour and Conservative parties of Newcastle and Stoke-on-Trent, Chief Anthony-Claret emphasized their dedication to building a diverse community.

The Iriji event was a remarkable success, marking the first outing of the Igbo Union in Stoke, UK, under the leadership of Honourable Engr. Anthony-Claret Onwutalobi.
